Toyota's Camry Hybrid may not have been the first midsize sedan to be offered as a hybrid (that title goes to the short-lived Accord V6 Hybrid), but it was the first full hybrid vehicle, and the one that has endured through gas prices high and low.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Camry Hybrid carries over unchanged from last year. The Camry Hybrid was last updated for 2015 when it received new styling, a stiffer chassis and added technology.
That said, the Camry Hybrid faces more competition than ever. Last year saw the Kia Optima, Hyundai Sonata, and Chevrolet Malibu enter the market with hybrid variants, while Ford and Honda have just updated their hybrid Fusion and Accord, respectively. The Camry Hybrid must also contend with the latest generation Prius which is bigger, more economical, and more spacious than before. Nevertheless, the Camry Hybrid remains a good choice for green-minded consumers for its spacious cabin, comfortable ride, proven hybrid powertrain and sub-$30,000 asking price.
Camry Hybrids come in three trim levels. The base LE is joined by the sport-appearance SE trim, and the luxe XLE. All trims use a 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder that's paired to an electric motor and a NiMH battery pack. The total output of the system is 200 hp, which is more than the standard four-cylinder Camry. The Camry Hybrid uses a CVT transmission for optimal efficiency. The Camry Hybrid LE is rated at 5.6 L/100 km city and 6.2 highway; the SE and XLE use slightly more fuel due to their larger and wider tires.
Opting for the Camry Hybrid means sacrificing little compared to the standard Camry. The only visual differences are blue-accented Toyota badges and additional Hybrid logos on the fenders and trunk lid. The interior is as roomy and comfortable as the standard model. The only real visual difference is a multi-gauge which indicates the hybrid powertrain’s state. As for trunk space, it’s reduced to a still-useable 370 litres, which can be extended by folding the 60/40 split folding seats.
Standard equipment on the Camry LE includes proximity key with push-button start, a power driver's seat, a 6.1-inch display audio system with USB port, Bluetooth, and reverse camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, and full power accessories.
The SE adds 17-inch alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension, unique front grille, rear spoiler, sports seats with ultrasuede upholstery, power passenger seat, leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, and alloy scuff plates.
Other than the fancy Lexus styling and a bit of rear-seat legroom, the XLE Hybrid makes for a convincing ES 300h alternative. It includes standard navigation with 7.0-inch display, radar cruise control, emergency autonomous braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, unique 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery, wireless device charging, full LED headlamps, and a power moonroof.
Pricing for the Camry LE starts at $29,550 and tops out at $36,450 for the XLE.
